after the successful calypso roses far from home album, because music will release a two remixes ep for the record store day. those remixes are made by the south african mo laudi. his work is considered to be in the vein of jamie xx’s music. forget the thorns, because she has them, and without delay pick this (calypso) rose who, at 76 years old, looks fresher than ever. calypso rose was always a fighter and had to overcome hostility from her father, a baptist preacher thoroughly opposed to her pursuing a musical career. and she was sexually abused as a teenager, as she bravely confessed in calypso rose, lioness of the jungle, the 2009 documentary about her. a tireless worker, she composed almost 800 songs, starting at age 13, and spent 17 years singing on cruise ships for the new york-based company celebration at sea, before playing on the legendary stages of the apollo and madison square garden with two of the greatest calypsonians, lord kitchener and mighty sparrow. calypso rose is a fighter indeed: you dont survive cancer and two heart attacks without a solid dose of grinta.

uk artists reset robot, jon gurd and tom powell collaborate again on their free-form hybrid electronica project- mister woo . following a series of under-the-radar eps, beyond light is the trio s debut album and most experimental and eclectic work so far. mister woo recorded beyond light in their portsmouth studio over three weeks in 2016, setting themselves to writing and recording tracks on-the fly and building an album around one-take, improvised performances. free to take its own form and direction from the outset, the result is a varied, unpredictable, high-energy record that pushes mister woo s distinct brand of electronica into new and unexplored places

matuss takes techno and turns it on its head. the cybernetic sound has been filled with human emotion, giving it a more organic feel than much of the music that would fall under the genre. she opens her absence seizure 007 ep in trademark style, with a dark jacking cut entitled pitchureque, in which a pulsating bass line throbs alongside ominous acid swells and disorientating panning effects. next up, tektango takes a different route honing in on a set of live tribal tinged percussion, which sway and dissipate with hypnotic effect driven further into the depths with a bubbling synth lead and filtering atmospherics. this live percussion gives the track that organic feel mentioned earlier. escapade kick starts the b-side with a robust rhythm, built from the ground up with resonant hi hat stabs, echoing claps and sturdy kicks which forms the framework for a deranged lead melody laced with wide open synths and emotive chords to carry the groove. closing the package is fonque, where flanger-tinged snare rolls work in unison with driving rhythms, delicate arpeggios and an intricate 303 bass line to create an infectious closing cut.

the music of swedish producer hans berg often soundtracks sculptural installations produced in collaboration with his partner nathalie djurberg. working as an artistic duo since 2004, their output comprises animation, public sculpture, immersive environments and now, vinyl recordings taken from these same pieces. berg brings his experience in house and techno music culture to bear on this cooperative process. the first track began life as an accompaniment to the outdoor work in dreams (2016), installed at the wanås sculpture park in sweden. a naturalistic soundscape of birdsong gives way to a wave of complex, driving synth-pop, itself a shimmering reflection of the riotous, mirrored floor that nestled in the forest glade.

bas roos is a dj and producer from rotterdam, the netherlands. he started dj ing at the age of 16 after spending some time on making his own music. a year later he released his first ep and from that moment on he started to develop a unique and fresh sound which has seen releases on phil weeks’ robsoul label as well as shir khan’s black jukebox disco house series on exploited. the 18th edition of black jukebox sees the young producer deliver 4 new tracks which work magic on the dancefloor. do yourself a favor and pick it up before this limited collector’s item sells out.

ambient power duo anjous sophomore statement continues in the vein of their 2014 debut, unfurling a full hour of mesmeric synthetic drift and veiled melodic undertow. comprised of mark nelson (of pioneering post-rock experimentalists labradford and pan american) and robert donne (of labradford, aix em klemm, cristal), the group work largely in long-form suites of sound, alternately spacious and dense. the new lps six pieces embrace flux and ambiguity: drones swell and shudder, hushed currents of noise glitch and dissolve, atmospheres congeal and liquify. as with the participants prior projects, anjou evoke a shadowed, mysterious mood, variously melancholy and transcendent. the album is an accumulation of craftsmanship and experience, blurred forms traced in light and fog.

amsterdams cult producer and dj steven van hulle aka awanto 3 likes his samples vibrant, his drums wobbly and his synths sweaty as a detroit summer breeze. the mpc wizard returns to dekmantel delivering his second, full-length album. gargamel is arguably his most compelling piece of work. spread over the course of nine tracks, van hulle shows hes capable of serving up many different styles and genres in his ever-expanding arsenal.

a new, twenty-track compilation focussing on a twenty-year period (1950-1970) of modern jazz in the little kingdom, featuring the leading players from that era. due to the absence of its main players during the heydays of modern jazz, belgium will not be remembered for a unique jazz sound or an extensive discography. however, the little country produced a number of highly talented musicians who played lead roles on the international jazz scene. let s get swinging: modern jazz in belgium 1950-1970 retraces their steps and presents some of their finest works, including guitarist philip catherine, saxophonist jack sels, multi-instrumentalist jacques pelzer and vibraphone player, percussionist and vocalist fats sadi lallemand.

siince the release of his debut album, substantial, in 2004, volker bertelmann – aka hauschka – has, slowly but surely, earned a remarkable reputation as a purveyor of imaginative, distinctive, prepared piano music. this isn’t, to be fair, a heavily populated field, but it’s one he’s made his own, and while some might have dismissed his work early on as a novelty, bertelmann has proven himself to be uncommonly inventive, coaxing ever more unprecedented, euphonic sounds and rhythms out of his instrument. even so, on what if – which finds him adding player pianos (also known as pianolas) to his armoury – bertelmann expands his range even further, defying expectations and delivering what is without doubt his most ingenious album yet.

swedish producer hans berg returns to pooledmusics techno-focused sister imprint montage with another collection of uniquely esoteric techno. known for previous work on kant and collaborations with johanna knutsson, berg debuted on the label in 2015 with the field ep. his second outing once again provides another showcase for his intriguing rhythmic sensibilities and pleasingly askew take on the classic techno sound palette. the ep is completed by another heads-down burner of a remix from silvershower, aka label boss ian pooley.

the first release from new vinyl only label cherub records. the ‘figure of state’ ep features four tracks: two original cuts from london upstart william earl in analogue work out mode. doppelate’s remix of the ‘figure of state’ on the a-side is an down-tempo, atmospheric trip whilst pépe’s remix of ‘stokey waltz’ takes us into blissfully uplifting, arpeggiated territory.

brian abelson aka see other is one of the brightest talents in this field to emerge from new york in some time. he’s been honing and refining his style of brooding, purring, oscillating house rollers for some time. the final brew is humble mixture of low-slung smallville-esque house warmth, fred p level deepness and playful, tinkering wooden melodies that recall some of the finest work from the drumpoet community collective.

long time minus artist jon gaiser is back with his fourth studio album on richie hawtin’s influential techno label, simply entitled ‘iii’. the first signals from the album are sent with march single ‘on the way.’ it is a funky track with wriggling synths executed in undeniable gaiser fashion. textured hi hats and loopy bass all work on sucking you into the colorful and trippy groove. add into the package a typical big remix from sci+tec boss and techno megastar dubfire and you have one of the most essential releases of 2017.

one in a million leads with a bright 90s garage house beat reminiscent of disclosure before breaking into the kind of danceable indie-pop swagger that will excite fans of lcd soundsystem and hot chip. replete with remixes from zomby and playgroup this 12inch sets a precednt for olsson 12inch release where he kindly asks his heros to reimagine his work. in this case two of electrtonic musics most exciting and consistent names step up.

the first long-awaited release of champ libre records compiles the tracks of the labels three pioneering artists. since 2015, spun off, 3-pi, and size pier heave been heavily shaping the eclectic character of the most daring parisian dancefloor. their work reflects the crew’s transgressive approaches to techno. it stands for contradictory ideas, open-minded experimentation with sound, art and aesthetics. genese ep highlights each artists intriguing distinctiveness growing from the background of creative chaos.

discographies in dance music don’t come much more impressive than that belonging to paul woolford, the man behind seminal releases for the likes of planet e, xl recordings and running back. special request is the project that sees him continuing to defy expectation with a new ep on the fabric-run label houndstooth. stairfoot lane bunker encapsulates this approach with 5 bold new excursions into the outer limits followed by a remix from minor science (known for his previous releases on whities and the trilogy tapes) the eagle-eyed will notice 5 of these tracks appear on fabriclive 91. this ep is issued as an addendum. redrum is the fierce opener. rampantly-edited electro beats, a sampled speak-n-spell vocal, and a pure sci-fi breakdown sets the scene for the rest. stairfoot lane bunker and replicant are jungle tracks taken to dizzying extremes - the former building from widescreen atmospherics, thunder spells and lightning before descending into a frenzy of breakbeats and long heavy bass notes. replicant ratchets the pressure up further with hyper-edits across it s breakbeat introduction and throughout, punctuated by furnace-rattling subs. telepathic dog and five lane ends are highly evocative ambient pieces, pushing into the uncanny realms of metaphysical music. to end the release minor science comes through with his remix of stairfoot lane bunker, effortlessly blending in his own work with the disjointed sr breakbeats, flashing only snippets of the serrated bars, chopping them up and creating a new track in the process.

mark rae is the man behind one of the key uk music movements of the last 25 years. as a founder of the shop fat city records and the label grand central, mark worked with some of the worlds biggest artists going on to earn several platinumm discs with his work as one half of the highly respected production duo rae & christian. this project is a worlds first autobiography and album, the release is packaged as a gatefold 10 inch which opens out to the book held within. the 40 000 word book covers the author mark rae s journey through the music industry. it follows the creation and dissolution of fat city and grand central records, rae & christian and yesking. the underground club scenes of manchester, gang wars, success, failure, working with bobby womack, jay z and the pharcyde. the project has been supported by whosampled, dj magazine, vice and the tate modern. the artwork is exceptional featuring an historical montage throughout the inner gatefold sleeve. the music features guest vocals from tony d who was a big influence in the original grand central records sound, soul king pete simpson, multi instrumentalist shawn lee and kate rogers.

a new single by pama international and it s again available only on a super limited edition 45 vinyl only. on the a side a superb version of man next door. the song has been originally recorded by john holt with his group the paragons in 1968 on duke reids duke label and since then it has been covered by numerous other reggae artists including dennis brown, ub40 and horace andy, becoming a massive hit thanks to andy s more recent version with trip-hop superstars massive attack in their album mezzazine. on the flip side you ll find the rock steady scorcher austerity skank that has already gained support on the airwaves by reagge ambassadords david rodigan and don letts. in their first 10 years pama int l recorded 9 albums, 3 bbcradio 1 maida vale sessions, won the rebel playlist on bbc6, and became the first new act to sign to trojan records in 30 years. their collective nature saw them work with members of the specials, madness, steel pulse, style council, galliano, kasabian, mad professor, toots & the maytals, jimmy cliff to name a few.

hailing from the ruhr area in germany, the homewreckers have a long history to look back on. numerous projects have involved the three band members johannes ehmann, gregor pottmeier and krischan wesenberg in the past 20 years always meandering between the realms of jazz, blues, soul, house and techno. between the profound bags of djs and the shelves of audiophile heads. their unique sound spans from deep dancefloor oriented electronic music to film soundtracks that, amongst others, underlined the infamous productions of the artist harun farocki. confusion ep is an excerpt of their upcoming album machine kiss that sums up six years of research and work and melts the influence of more than 25 years of knowledge onto one record.

the new york-based (u)nity is made up of michael valeanu, axel tosca laugart, chris smith, max cudworth and amaury acosta. they formed the band in 2006 as a project to explore afro-cuban jazz, funk, soul and contemporary electronica. they say they ve been influenced by everyone from chucho valdes to art blakey to led zeppelin to kendrick lamar, and you can definitely hear all of that in this jawdropping work. guarapachanga is special in that it was the first song written by the band back in their days as music students at the new school. it s derived from the style known as guarapachangeo the most advanced form of cuban rumba, heavily improvisational and based on very complex rhythms and melodies. on this recording, (u)nity is graced with a guest performance by grammy award winner pedrito martinez, a master rumbero, one of the greatest conga players ever, an innovator who has left a permanent mark on cuban music. martinez is also a priest in the yoruba religion and a historian of cuban culture. over its eight and a half minutes, guarapachanga twists and turns and journeys through a mind bending array of different tempos and modes, from latin jazz to hip hop, ultimately ending with a trippy ambient soundscape. the whole thing is overlaid with free spirited melody, soul and the afro-cuban essence that is the bands lifeblood. the white-hot live playing gives it the feel of the best early-morning jam session, yet it packs a sonic punch that will make it sound incredible on a good sound system in the hands of adventurous djs in the world-beat or spiritual-house vein. if you didnt know guarapachanga was a contemporary work you might mistake it for a loft classic, yet it s also as fresh and exciting as anything you ll hear this year.

after debuting on mr. gs phoenix g imprint in 2016 with the unfamiliar territory ep, jayson wynters makes an appearance on dba for this, his second release, backed by a kowton remix. jayson wynters is a dj that is able to combine many genres in one set and make it work. wynters was first known as a garage mc in birmingham, before rising to prominence in the city s underground radio and club scene, where he showcased an impressive knowledge of rare groove and house music. as he got older his taste for music began to mature, his collection began to grow, and he soon began to dj. using music as an outlet for expression, whether in the form of djing or having fun on some drum machines and synths, is one of the most defining features to wynters. he continues to fuel his passion by keeping an eye on the future rather than the past and striving to remain different.

denis morin presents working k an experimental skip across the turrets of techno. driving beats form base to a high humidity discussion between heavy ambience, exploratory field recordings and the weirded out whirring of man and machines. working k is meandering, evolving and ever changing. new chapters fold on top of new chapters, fuse into each other and make new pages within themselves.

haunter records’ 2017 kicks off with two new displays of aural expansion by longtime members of the milan-based crew. twin singles from weightausend and petit singe that also mark the label’s first ventures into 7” format. through heavy use of darkened breakbeats and angular dynamics, each of the two producers sets out to have their unique sonic approach ring on throughout the sprawl.
matthias girardi aka weightausend keeps on compiling his private neuroses in a process that seems to achieve catharsis through gloomy analysis and maniacal surgical dissection. hammering down on his dubwise tendencies and his love for the dark side of jungle, he gives out his most club-oriented work to date, channeling two new bassy rollercoasters, including a new version of “green death”.

kreattones third release is here, and we are extremely proud and thrilled to present “day tripper” from the outrageously talented jesse bru. this four-track ep is a lesson on sampling, cutting and building, an aspect already acclaimed and recognized by all that had the chance to hear jesse s work (released on heart to heart, egoplanet, etc…). the opening track shares the ep title and clearly demonstrates mr. bru’s vision on deep-house, with elements coming and going, breaks and drops, all working in perfect harmony. “i want u” is a groundbreaking piece of art, filled with melancholy, heart-driven feelings and shivering whispers, resulting in a gorgeous love song. the first track on the b side, “they told me” is a uplifting tune, with clinic-cut sampling, powerful vocals and beautiful percussion. last but not least “remember how it used to be”, a groovy arrangement of pads and vocals topped with a killer bass, ideal for club use. considering that this one blew our scale, we hope you enjoy this record as much as we do.

spunoff opens the first door of a new french vinyl label, stratos rec, with his portal ep. this label bring us into an artistic travel between techno to ambient, experimental music and art. it aims at being a little different, inviting at each release a guest who is totally free to do an edit of the originals tracks as he want, and a part of the artwork of the vinyl. we want to confront different styles and brains and let’s see what happens.
for the str001, the young parisian, spunoff, give us three powerful, dark & energetic techno tracks. the guest is above all a visual artist. but also a dj & producer. brother of the famous richie hawtin, matthew takes parts of different originals tracks and constitute a eight minutes ambient & experimental edit. definitly an interesting work add to this ep who take you out of yourself. the label design have been done by a french artist & photographer, david souenellen. matthew hawtin draws up the b-side visual.

days of being wild continues their collaboration with berlin based french producer franz matthews, releasing his first solo ep, the spacey, cosmic ostkreuz. half of the duo languages, whose 1st ep the label released at the end of last year, franz matthews explores a very different sound on his first solo effort, all space disco, retro synths and funky guitars out. title track ostkreuz has been road tested by the days of being wild crew on dance floors all around europe all of last year and has created euphoria and anticipation in equal measure. this is a cosmic hit from outer space, all constructed around well known ingredients that thanks to franz matthews musical and melodic talent rise here to epic heights. the b-side guns of rixdorf is another devastating peak time tune. while remaining in the same vein as ostkreuz, it feels more high energy with its irresistible funky guitars calling and responding over a driving bass. days of being wild always try to pair producers with remixers that will shed a new light on their work. its no exception with ostkreuz, who gets the reinvention treatment from no other than moscoman and rodion aka the claydermans. the cosmic vibe is still here hovering on top in the opening chords of the remix, but soon enough a sub, housier bass makes its way in the mix and wont let you go until the end. carried by shuffling claps and a bouncier beat, the groove here is totally re-invented, taking ostkreuz from peak time to the darker edges of after land.

south london house label giant records offers up its eighth release. after a chance meeting on a london bus grant and david got talking about house music and the result followed in david sending grant these two wicked cuts, which were signed immediately david beigers dream factory ep is ladened with twists and turns of cinematic tech funk two original cuts here from german born david surface and dream factory, the later coming with a remix from grant dell grants take on dream factory is a heavy blend of tribal work outs, shaka zulu chants and shouts with some heavy sub-bass to boot featuring excerpts from mutabarukas the poem.

welcome to season five of the jazz jousters sessions. after four years of non stop album releases we thought we d take a few months time out to think and work out what we would do next this season. we decided to attempt another locations series since we are yet to take on some of the locations many of you have suggested via our updates pages and emails. so here we go...
mjm would like to present locations: usa, the vinyl and cassette edition as we continue to explore the sounds, influences and styles of jazz music in different regions of the world.
in this session we hear the result of each jouster as they each chose one or more jazz musicians from the united states and began to work with that sound and come up with an instrumental in their own style, just like in season four. however there was a twist, this time they were challenged to focus on jazz between the years of 1960 to 1969. see what you think of the outcome...

when tresor founder dimitri hegemann stumbled into a former bank vault in east berlin on march 13th 1991, he had little idea that the space he had unlocked would fast become one of berlin s most influential and enduring techno clubs. “we didn’t know what would happen 10 months later,” he says. “we signed a lease for a year. which eventually got renewed for another three months, and another three months…”
as tresor celebrates its 25th anniversary with this work of artists from the us, germany, china, france, austria, italy and the uk, it is worth dwelling on how the cultural conditions that birthed detroit techno – economic neglect and broken industry – were mirrored by the disused bunkers and impromptu parties of post-unification east berlin, where techno found new, vigorous expression.
